Why Adventure Makes Life Fulfilling

Here’s the thing about life: it’s full of wonder…so wander. Curiosity is one of the best qualities in a human being. It’s a quality that allows personal growth, mentally and spiritually.

Last year, I took my wanderlust to a whole new level – exploring ten countries, going on adventure after adventure. My friends and I would spontaneously book trips and seek to discover the world. We witnessed unbelievable architecture in Budapest, hiked along the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland, and were inspired by the chicest streetwear in Milan.

While living in Milan, I would convince my friends to hop on the metro with me and randomly pick a number between 1 and 10 to determine which stop to get off at. Then, we would simply explore that neighborhood; and each moment of spontaneity felt fulfilling. I often solo-adventured like this while abroad, and I apply the same concept here when driving on the freeway. I’m very fortunate and grateful for the experiences I have had abroad, but adventure is always right outside your door. You just have to go out and find it.

And if I’m speaking with candor, some of the best adventures are the ones enjoyed in solitude. During the end of my experience, I took the train to Cinque Terre, Italy in which beholds five beautiful, intimate towns along the Italian coast. From hiking day and night to sleeping on the beach beneath the stars, I started to reflect how much I learned during the most five incredible months of my life to date.

Within exploring the world and exploring life, I lost and found myself all over again. I met strangers who shared their stories and was enlightened by each and every one’s lust for life. It’s crucial to not live to merely exist, but to live life full of passion and zeal. We cross paths with people for a reason, and these strangers made me love adventure that much more. You’ll discover the most stunning scenic views that will make you radiate the most gigantic smile and meet people who will touch your heart and soul. We live in a beautiful world with beautiful people, and adventures will open your eyes and mind to this idea that some may claim foreign.

Now get lost.

My First Adventure

By: Mariah Adams

No matter where I seem to move or where my travels take me, I always find myself wanting to explore on my own. And though I’m sure my mom would like to forget this, I have been doing just that since a very young age.

When I was about three years old, my family and I moved to a small village in Germany for my dad’s work. In the town of Münster-Amelsbüren, I attended kindergarten and first grade. Everyday, my mom walked me to and from my kindergarten a couple blocks away. One day, I decided I wanted to find my own way home (or to Frau Rose’s bakery...or maybe it was the toy store that sold the Scala dolls?), much to my mother’s dismay. Of course, mind you, I did not live very far from my home, but I still managed to walk in circles in our small town. People around the town square recognized me and tried to corral me in the right direction even though I insisted on going my own way. Eventually I was intercepted by the couple that use to babysit me and they returned to my mother. I will always remember trying to adventure out on my own at that age.

Later in life, this need to go off on my own would follow me to Spain in the eighth grade, or Vancouver the summer after my junior year of college. In Spain, I would find an elusive toy store that sold Diddls, mouse dolls from Germany. In Vancouver, I discovered savory fish and chips in Stanley Park. I have found that I cannot sit still if I feel I need to explore an area, even where I live in San Diego. It may be cliché, but you never know what you may find around the corner.

Embrace your wanderlust and chase the unexpected.

SOLO Summer Social Went Off!

The SOLO Summer Social was awesome! We want to thank a few people for the success we had. First off to the W hotel, we could not have put on such an amazing event without your help and space. We encourage anyone in San Diego to take the time to go down and hang out on their rooftop lounge. Sun, cold drinks, and cool people; what more could you ask for? Secondly we want to thank Good on Ya drinks for supplying our guests with some delicious natural beverages. Third, Jackson Breit was one hell of a performer and musician, and we certainly owe him one for making everyone laugh, cheer, and sing along to great music throughout the party. Finally- we want to thank every one of you who came out, and especially those of you who bought SOLO's and supported our mission to give. If you didn't make it, no worries, there is always next year!

Lazy Summer Afternoon

I'm sitting outside, in my parents backyard in Los Angeles. As the temperature nears 80 degrees, I relax in the shade and listen to flamenco music. I contemplate getting up from my chair to get something cold from the fridge but I'm far too comfortable. I realize that if someone were to ask me that cliche question, about what my "happy place" was, it would be this; right here, right now.

I look past my parents lawn at the massive magnolia tree that grows on their hill and frames the blue sky with its large, green leaves- if they could only talk. How many times had they watched a younger me play underneath them? Fall asleep in their shade? I wonder if they would have cried out when I nailed wooden planks into the trunk as I built a tree fort, or if they would have smiled all those years ago when I stole a kiss from that girl who laughed afterward. I was certainly happy those leaves couldn't call out to my mother when I pretended I was studying under them but secretly had a book hidden inside my homework folder; although the more I think about it the more I suspect she knew all along.

It's impossible not to smile as I reminisce and relax. Maybe I will grab something from the fridge, or maybe I'll just fall asleep for a while...

Fathers Day is On Sunday

Before I was around, my dad used to race bicycles professionally. I was super proud when I found out he placed 10th out of 5,000 contestants in a race he did a few weekends ago in NYC.

While on the subject- this Sunday is fathers day! These days it’s almost impossible to find a unique gift; one that excites and surprises, and your old man probably doesn’t need another BBQ apron. As you may know SOLO has just introduced a whole new line of sunglasses for summer. We think your dad would love all of them, however, there are a few that stick out from the rest.

Give him something that no-one else has! Every pair of glasses from our “artist series” is made individually, making them all one of a kind. And of course we still incorporated all the features you love, including recycled bamboo frames and spring loaded hinges. Check out "the wave."

Does your dad look like this?

Yes you say? Well that's super bitchin' - you should be proud because Hasselhoff is the man. And the rest of you needn't fret- because SOLO has you covered.

Give your dad a pair of our signature "Hoff's" and he will be towing boats out of dangerous waters with his teeth in no time at all.

Speaking of boats, if neither of these glasses are floatin' yours, we have our entire collection available on our website.

Have fun this Sunday enjoying your family and spending time with your Dad.
